Fullmetal Alchemist VS Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Hello again guys, I'm not gonna start any FMA VS Brotherhood debates but for this post I'm gonna be comparing the animation in the two series. And to do this i will generally be comparing them through the animators that contributed to both series. The most memorable animator people should recognise for the original FMA would be Yutaka Nakamura whose style is the most easily recognisable because he is an amazing animator of characters and effects and he always makes sure they stay on model which is Nice considering most good animators these days (Shingo Yamashita) sometimes have trouble with it. So heres the first video (The FMA stuff starts at 1:16 and 3:12)

Yutaka Nakamura

From the video you can see he is the person responsible for some of the best looking scenes and the ones that are most memorable for me. You get a sense that he knows how to make characters move realistically without having to go finding lots and lots of reference footage which is the reason animation fans such as myself love to watch his work and why its so easy to spot. So now on the brotherhood side its generally agreed upon that his counterpart for brotherhood would be Yoshimichi Kameda who is an up and comer and also BONES's new favourite dude which you can tell because he has worked on a lot of BONES shows and worked on some of the most important scenes in the new Milos movie and an astounding 16 episodes of brotherhood. Heres the video.

Yoshimichi Kameda

There it is (He is responsibe for the amazing Mustang VS Lust confrontation and one thing that should be noted is that those frames of animation are all his as he did key animation as well as inbetweens which means that looks exactly how he wants it to look). Kameda is an animator that i really love because of his more sketchy and exagarated style of movement and while i love it, it seems that some people dont care for that but that is more in the movie than the brotherhood itself. While his style continues to evolve and has seen quite a few changes since he came on the scene, it is still very recognisably him. The last animator i'm going to talk about is Hironori Tanaka who work on 7 episodes of Brotherhood iirc. So he is one of the other animators that you would notice if you look for that sort of thing because he is one BONES liked to use and something i find funny is that he was the only one that was able to animate Envy's true form in its entirety and not just an arm and a leg now and again. Heres his video.

Hironori Tanaka

I always think that Tanaka is one of those guys that puts so much work into every thing he does that it never looks lazy. The movements look wierd yet realistic and the detail he puts into the hair is something that most animators don't even bother with. He has stated that he was inspired to become an animator by an animator named Shinya Ohira whose work you would have seen on the "Kid's Story" segment of The Animatrix. These two guys are both some of the reasons why i really love the look of brotherhood overall.

So, to conclude i would generally say that Kameda and Tanaka are Great, Nakamura is just amazing with his animation being on par with Tanaka's and Kameda's put together so i would say that this would be a tie in my opinion. I'll be back next week for more.

Score for both series animation 4/5.

  1. Yeah, he knows how to make quick action still move fluently without blurring the characters.
